    but I wonder – Don’t guards defeat the purpose of getting a little tougher, learning to perform even when hurting?

    kicking trees is not necessarily the best way to harden your shins
    I do a ton of bag work since I train in MMA, I do kicks and shin work, and think they are def inmportant for training

    Your legs are going to take a lot of beating in fights and training too so also good idea to get plenty of vitamins an specifically vitamin D as well as calcium to help build strong bones especially since they will be breaking down maybe a little quicker if you are an avid fghter/ trainer

    the thing is I remember just the first two punches to my face. When I received the first few punches I was out of my breath and fell down and the other students made me stand for the next round of conditioning, which I don’t even remember.

    Until you’re more comfortable and conditioned a set of pad during bag work might not be bad. If you’ve noticed busing or such, then certainly use them until it goes down. Just my two cents. I’ve been training for about 10 years and at first didn’t use MMA shin guards then dearly regretted it
