Beating the stuffing out of Wilson Reis wasn’t ‘Mighty Mouse’’s only goal at UFC on FOX 24, the long-reigning UFC champion also wanted to get something specific out of the promotion.
Demetrious Johnson has a dream, and it’s not just of hitting a new all time kill streak record on Destiny. The UFC’s flyweight champion has been working overtime to meet and beat Anderson Silva’s UFC title defense record. And now that he’s running equal to ‘The Spider,’ DJ wants a little extra compensation.
It’s not money, or not exactly, but as the champ put it, before picking up his dominant win in Kansas City on Saturday, “Floyd Mayweather has a picture with his all his championship belts, and I think Andre Ward just did it too. And I think it would be cool if I can re-create that same image in mixed martial arts.”
And to do that, Johnson feels he needs a belt for every title defense he’s had so far. An unlikely request, but after beating Wilson Reis at UFC on FOX 24, Johnson got belt no. 2 from the UFC. Just eight more left to collect. For his part, however, UFC president Dana White assured the flyweight champion that those belts are coming (transcript via MMA Junkie).
“I’m going to get him his belts,” White told Megan Olivi of UFC.com after the event. “He’s definitely keeping the belt from tonight, and I guess I’ve got some catching up to do. Listen, that’s not the way it works. People don’t win belts every time. You defend your title, and you keep your belt. If we’re handing out belts every single defense here – that’s a lot of money.
“It would be a lot of money to get him eight more belts. To be honest with you, we don’t even have eight more belts. We order them as we do events. It’s going to be a little bit of back up on his belts, but we’ll get it done.”
Is this the start of a new 10 belts for 10 title defenses club? If so, the membership is already pretty exclusive.
