An exciting lightweight contest has been added to the UFC’s upcoming December stop in Detroit.
A pair of exciting lightweights are set to do battle in Detroit. Al Iaquinta and Paul Felder has been scheduled for UFC 218. The Detroit Free Press announced the matchup Thursday evening. The UFC has since confirmed the booking on Twitter.
Iaquinta’s ongoing issues with the UFC made it unclear whether the top ranked lightweight would ever fight again. He became a real estate broker in Long Island last year and seemed to have moved on from fighting. However, he returned in April with a TKO win over Diego Sanchez. The Sanchez win was Iaquinta’s first fight in over two years, since getting a controversial decision win over Jorge Masvidal.
Felder (14-3) is riding a two-fight winning streak with first-round stoppages of Stevie Ray and Alessandro Ricci. “The Irish Dragon” is 4-1 over his last five outings; his lone loss in the past two years is a doctor’s stoppage defeat to Francisco Trinaldo in September 2016.
Felder made his commentary debut this past summer on the Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series events; he worked color commentary every other event. Most recently, he was also a guest commentator at UFC Fight Night 116 last month.
The UFC 218 bout order has not yet been finalized. It isn’t clear where on the card Iaquinta vs. Felder will take place.
UFC 218 will take place at Little Caesars Arena on Dec. 2. In the main event, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will make his first title defense against longtime contender Frankie Edgar.
