UFC on FOX 26 in Winnipeg has a few more big fights.
The UFC’s return to Winnipeg is shaping up very nicely.
Former featherweight champion Jose Aldo will meet Ricardo Lamas for the second time in the UFC on FOX 26 co-main event, and a welterweight bout between Santiago Ponzinibbio and Mike Perry is also set for the event. TSN first reported the news Friday, and UFC officials shortly thereafter confirmed the pairings.
Following an 18-fight winning streak that lasted nine years, Aldo (26-3) is 1-2 in his last three fights. In June, the Brazilian lost the UFC featherweight title by third-round TKO to Max Holloway. He was promoted to undisputed titleholder late last year after Conor McGregor won the lightweight title and was subsequently stripped of his 145-pound belt. Just months prior, Aldo had won the interim title in a rematch with Frankie Edgar at UFC 200. “Junior,” the greatest featherweight of all time, first lost the 145-pound championship by 13-second knockout to McGregor in December 2015.
Lamas (18-5), who challenged Aldo for the title in February 2014 but lost by decision, is riding a two-fight winning streak. In his last fight, “The Bully” crushed Jason Knight in the first round at July’s UFC 214. He also holds a recent submission win over jiu-jitsu ace Charles Oliveira. Lamas’ last loss was a decision to Holloway at UFC 199 in June 2016.
Ponzinibbio (25-3) has been on a tear in the welterweight division over the past two years. The owner of a current five-fight winning streak, “Gente Boa” handed Gunnar Nelson a first-round TKO loss in the UFC Fight Night 113 main event in July. The Argentina native, who after the Nelson win landed himself a top 10 spot in the 170-pound rankings, has also defeated Nordine Taleb and Zak Cummings.
Perry (11-1) has turned into a hot commodity in short time, too. “Platinum” made his UFC debut in August 2016 on short notice and finished Hyun Gyu Lim in the first round. He followed that upset win with a stoppage of Danny Roberts, but came up short in his next outing against Alan Jouban. Perry is back on a two-fight winning streak in the organization, however; in 2017, Perry has knocked out Jake Ellenberger and, most recently, Alex Reyes.
The UFC on FOX 26 bout order has not yet been finalized, but it seems likely Ponzinibbio vs. Perry will open up the four-fight main card on FOX.
TSN also reported a welterweight bout between Jordan Mein and Erick Silva for the Winnipeg card.
UFC on FOX 26 will take place at Bell MTS Place on Dec. 16. In the main event, former champions Robbie Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos collide with a welterweight title shot on the line.
