FORTALEZA, Brazil — Alex Oliveira continues his rise as a welterweight in the UFC, and is confident that tapping Tim Means at UFC Fight Night 106 will change the way some fans see him.

“Cowboy” was an underdog in his rematch against Means in Fortaleza, Brazil. In their first clash last December, Means was dominating the contest before he intentionally landed an illegal knee. Oliveira was unable to return, and the referee ultimately ruled the bout a no-contest.

Oliveira not only avenged the beating, but he tapped Means with a rear-naked choke last Saturday — and he admits that it felt good to beat Means in Brazil.

“We met at the hotel and stared at each other every day before the fight,” Oliveira said after the win. “I’m a cool guy. If I took this to my heart, we’d probably fight right there in the hotel. So I had to keep my head down and wait for the fight in the Octagon.”

The way the first fight ended, Oliveira says, motivated him more than any other fight he had before.

“That fight was stuck in my throat,” said Oliveira. “I showed everyone what I’m capable of. I showed them that I was capable of defeating him. He was a stone in my way, and I’m over him. It tasted better because not many people believed in me, so I showed him I have great potential.”

Oliveira (17-4-1, 2 NC) now holds wins stoppage over the likes of Means, Will Brooks, Piotr Halman and K.J. Noons in the UFC.
