Alexander Gustafsson is looking to have another crack at former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
In July, Jon Jones will be back in the UFC’s active roster. While nothing has been finalized, it is widely expected that he will be fighting for the title upon his return.
UFC president Dana White recently laid out two scenarios when “Bones” gets back in the picture: if he is ready, Jones fights Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 on July 29th. Otherwise, “DC” will fight Jimi Manuwa as Jones takes on another opponent.
If Jones does go for the second option, former challenger Alexander Gustafsson is ready to give him a welcome back fight after a year-long absence. Speaking to Champions.co, “The Mauler” relishes on the mere opportunity to potentially beat the man he was able to push towards the brink of defeat when they fought almost four years ago.
“One-hundred percent—if Jones wants a welcome party back to the UFC, then I’m happy to do that,” Gustafsson said. “Let’s see what happens, you know. It’s exciting times for the light heavyweight division.”
“The title shot is a big goal for everyone in the sport, but for me, the opportunity to beat Jones is almost the same thing.”
Misdemeanors and failed drug tests aside, Jones is still widely considered by many as one of the best in the game. Gustafsson recognizes this fact, and feels there is still some unfinished business that needs to be settled.
“When you look at it in the big picture, I still think Jones is the best guy in the division right now. DC [Daniel Cormier] is, of course, the world champion, but Jones, I believe, is still undefeated. He’s just made mistake after mistake in his personal life,” Gustafsson said.
“He’s thrown away his opportunities which is sad, but when the time comes for him to come back, I’ll gladly fight him. I want the belt as well, but Jones and I have unfinished business, and I’ll happily deal with it after I beat Glover.”
Gustafsson will headline UFC Fight Night 109 against Glover Teixeira on May 28th in Stockholm, Sweden.
