Anthony Smith to Daniel Cormier: It wouldn’t be an ‘honorable thing to do to hold up the division’

UFC double champion Daniel Cormier is currently enjoying the fruits of his labor. And with a massive fight against Brock Lesnar in the horizon, defending the UFC light heavyweight title is not in his top priority as of the moment.

This has been a cause for concern for other 205-pounders, one of them being Anthony Smith. During the post-fight press conference over the weekend, “Lionheart” called on Cormier to make a decision sooner than later on whether or not he would defend or vacate the title.

“The top of the division is a disaster right now,” Smith said (transcript via MMA Fighting). “‘Shogun’ was supposed to be next and now he’s not. No one knows what’s going on with Cormier. I think that that’s the first step, we need to figure out if Cormier’s staying or going. I’ve said this before, I think that Daniel is an honorable man and it wouldn’t be a very honorable thing to do to hold up the division.”

“He knows right now. You guys could ask him 100 times and he won’t tell you, but he knows if he’s coming back down or not, and I think that he needs to make that public so we can figure out what we’re all doing.”

Smith scored a significant first-round knockout win over Mauricio Rua at UFC Hamburg, marking the second former UFC champion he’s finished in a span of two fights.
