Josh Thomson proved to be the better man in the main event at Bellator 147, earning a technical knockout over Pablo Villaseca on Saturday in San Jose, Calif.
Thompson rolled through Villaseca on this way to the stoppage in the second round, which came at the 3:59 mark.
“I cannot lose in this town,” the San Jose fighter exclaimed during his post-fight interview.
Villaseca’s ground game had its moments, but Thomson ultimately worked his way out of trouble when his opponent secured the back. Thomson returned to his feet and established himself as the better fighter.
In the later moments of the fight, Thomson grounded his foe and rained on him with a series of ground-and-pound strikes that left Villaseca covering up his face. The referee stepped in after consecutive punches landed and the official TKO was read shortly after.
Thomson came to Bellator with an unspoken understanding that he would be in immediate contention for a title. However, Thomson chose to call out Michael Chandler, and not the current Bellator lightweight champion, Will Brooks, in his post-fight comments. Thomson’s justification, he said, was because there is more of a calling to see him face Chandler than the division’s current champ.
