The quarterfinals of the ongoing Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix were determined at Bellator 228 during a special selection show.
The final four participants in the tournament earned their way to the next round during fights that took place on Saturday night, including reigning featherweight champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire, who picked up a unanimous decision over Juan Archuleta just minutes before the selection show took place.
The fighters all selected numbers that allowed them to choose the dates when they would compete between December 2019, January 2020, February 2020 and the final fight in March 2020.
While “Pitbull” was actually the last fighter to draw, he was allowed a “champion’s choice,” which gave him the option to hand pick his date and opponent. Ultimately, Freire opted to take on Pedro Carvalho in March 2020 while stating that he needed a little time to rest following a five-round battle against Archuleta.
In the first fight in December, A.J. McKee looks to build on his blistering eight-second knockout on Saturday night as he takes on Derek Campos.
Moving to January 2020, Adam Borics faces off with former Bellator bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell, who moved into the quarterfinals with a victory over Henry Corrales at Bellator 228.
In February, Emmanuel Sanchez will look to avenge a prior loss when he meets Daniel Weichel. The final fight as previously mentioned will see “Pitbull” against Carvalho in March.
The winner of the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix will not only walk out with the 145-pound title but a $1 million grand prize.
