Another MMA show in New York, another strange ending.
Saturday night’s Bellator lightweight title fight between Michael Chandler and upstart contender Brent Primus took a strange turn when Chandler injured his left ankle early in the first round at Bellator NYC at Madison Square Garden.
Referee Todd Anderson called for the doctor to look at Chandler, and while Chandler insisted he could fight, the doctor waved the bout off — but not before a commission inspector managed to pull Chandler’s stool out from under him, causing him to crash to the mat.
The time of the stoppage was 2:22, giving Primus (8-0) the title via TKO.
“We’ll have a second fight, he deserves the fight, he’s a champion,” said Primus, a Portland, Ore., native.
Chandler appeared to tweak his ankle in the fight’s opening exchange, and it only got worse as the bout went along. Still, though, Chandler got the best of the fight’s offense, twice dropping Primus with crisp punches, the second time just seconds before the finish.
Chandler had a four-fight win streak ended as his second Bellator title reign came to close. He made it clear he wanted to continue fighting.
“Cut it off, cut this thing off,” screamed Chandler. “I’ll keep going. I didn’t hear a word he said, I can’t wait to get back in this cage.”
