There’s a danger in putting too much hype on a debuting prospect. Especially if you call him the best prospect in the history of the sport.
Such was the case on Saturday night, as much-heralded wrestling standout Aaron Pico lost in short order to unheralded Zach Freeman at Bellator NYC.
The St. Charles, Mo. native stunned the crowd at Madison Square Garden by submitting Pico in what was officially credited to a D’Arce choke. The time of the lightweight matchup was 24 seconds.
“The power of belief in this life, anything can happen,” said Freeman (9-2), who was making his Bellator debut. “But you have to believe it.”
Pico (0-1) came charging out at the outset, but ran into a knee. The second time he tried to engage, Pico ate a wicked uppercut and fell right into the choke.
Pico, who had both Eddie Bravo and Bob Cook in his corner, tapped soon thereafter, sending shockwaves through the New York crowd.
