It’s no Cyborg vs. Carano 2 (yet), but it’s a start. Scott Coker is bringing the women back into the fold, as Bellator MMA has announced the creation of a female featherweight division for its new-look promotion. Not coincidentally, the 145-pound weight class is something Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) does not have. Yet. We’re incredibly excited to bring in two of the best athletes competing in our sport today, the Bellator president said in today’s release. We are making a commitment to bring back the female division to Bellator, and feature some of the world’s best in the Bellator cage. Leading the charge will be former women’s bantamweight champion Marloes Coenen (21-6), who is no stranger to Coker, thanks to their work under the Strikeforce banner. That’s where her opponent, Julia Budd (6-2), cut her teeth prior to finding a spot in Invicta FC. Rumina and The Jewel are scheduled to thrown down later this year on Spike TV. This could potentially open the door for Gina Carano, who continues to flirt with a UFC contract that would put her inside the cage against Ronda Rousey. In addition, it makes room for Cris Cyborg and gives both ladies the option to compete without having to drop to bantamweight. The plot thickens…
