Bellator MMA wants to keep undefeated bantamweight Darrion Caldwell around for a while longer and has just announced the signing of a contract extension.
Bellator 154 “Davis vs. King Mo” took place back on May 14, 2016 at the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. The show featured “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis vs. Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and several surprising announcements.
Bellator stripped heavyweight champion Vitaly Minakov and released lightweight champion Will Brooks during the broadcast, so it’s hard to take the timing of this latest announcement as entirely unrelated.
“The Wolf” Darrion Caldwell, undefeated at 9-0 including a recent first round submission of Joe Warren, was touted as having signed a multi-year multi-fight contract to keep the bantamweight in Bellator.
“Darrion is a fighter who I really think has that x-factor,” Bellator President Scott Coker said. “After his last fight, I looked at our matchmaker and I just said, ‘Wow, this is kid is exploding with talent.’ I’m very happy we were able to get this deal done and I look forward to seeing this star rise for years to come.”
Caldwell seems to have no “ill will” at all toward his employers, offering only high praise for the promotion during a MMA Hour interview with Ariel Helwani.
“Bellator has been nothing but good to me,” he said. “They saw my talent early on in my career and they came after me. I’m here to let everyone know I’m going to continue my talents at Bellator MMA. With Bellator jumping on board, it’s time to get married. I’m in it for the long run.”
