Ben Askren went out on top, quickly dispatching Shinya Aoki at a ONE Championship show.
Former Bellator and current ONE Championship welterweight champion Ben Askren put the stamp on his undefeated MMA career today in Singapore. The 33-year-old took on legend Shinya Aoki in the main event of a ONE show, and it only took 57 seconds for him to get the victory.
Aoki pulled guard right away, which isn’t all that surprising. He was picked up and slammed back down by Askren, who brutalized him with ground and pound until Aoki turtled up and the fight was stopped.
Askren (18-0, 1 NC) mostly plied his trade in Bellator and ONE over an eight-year career, finishing with 11 stoppages in 18 career fights (one went to a No Contest). Despite his elite status, he was never on the radar of the UFC and Dana White has publicly spoken of his disdain for Askren and his “boring” style.
He says he is now ready to retire, but did leave the door open to a return:
“I think it’s it. I did leave that caveat, if I get the opportunity to prove I’m number one – I think I’m number one, I know I’m number one. I haven’t gotten to prove to the world I’m number one So if I get that opportunity, I’d take that opportunity.
“I don’t need to make any more money. I need to show people that I’m the best welterweight in the world. Other than that, I’m out.”
