It would be an understatement to say the month of October has been rough on Ben Rothwell. Not only did “Big Ben” lose his UFC Fight Night 76 co-main event slot after opponent Stipe Miocic withdrew due to injury, but the real punch to the gut came during fight week, when the UFC awarded Miocic the exact same opportunity Rothwell was campaigning so hard to get: a Jan. 2 top contender bout against Andrei Arlovski at UFC 195.
“Really, I was sick for like the whole day that I found out,” Rothwell admitted Monday on The MMA Hour. “Because look, I pegged it. I pegged the event, I pegged the opponent, I knew everything. It was right there. January 2, Andrei Arlovski. This is my fight. And then they’re like, ‘no, we’re going to give it to the guy who just f**king backed out with an injury.’ I’ve never seen this happen before ever, somebody getting booked the week that they’re supposed to fight.”
The announcement couldn’t have come at a worse time, as Rothwell learned of the news while doing P.R. work in Dublin for a contender fight that never actually happened.
