Blindsided Germaine de Randamie found out she was stripped of UFC featherweight title on social media

Germaine de Randamie was recently stripped of her Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight title after she refused to defend it against current No. 1 contender, Cristiane Justino.

Full details here and here.

So how did “Iron Lady” — who pointed to “Cyborg’s” history of failed drug tests as the reason to why she wouldn’t fight her — react to the unfortunate news that she would no longer be UFC champion?

To hear her tell it, it came as an unexpected blow, especially since no one at the WME-IMG offices told her anything about it.

“I had absolutely no idea that I was being stripped of the belt. I found out through social media,” said de Randamie in a statement to MMA Fighting. “Cyborg is going to fight Megan for the belt. Nobody ever told me anything about it.”

Cold.

De Randamie initially won the title after defeating Holly Holm in a highly-controversial title fight at UFC 208 earlier this year. Afterward, “Iron Lady” offered to give “The Preacher’s Daughter” a rematch instead of facing Justino, which never saw the light of day, either.

As a result of UFC’s decision to strip the title, “Cyborg” will face former Invicta FC 145-pound champion Megan Anderson at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017 in Anaheim, Calif., in what is expected to serve as co-main event for the highly-anticipated rematch between Light Heavyweight kingpin Daniel Cormier and former champion, Jon Jones.

As for what’s next for De Randamie, she is sticking to her plans of returning to the women’s bantamweight division in search for UFC gold.

“I’m definitely coming back,” she said. “I will go back to 135 pounds.”
