Saturday night is a busy night for fans of combat sports, with two boxing cards, plus UFC 228. The boxing matches are particularly interesting, with a number of ranked fighters taking part in close fights. Here are some of the weekend’s odds, courtesy of Bovada.
Danny Garcia -165
Shawn Porter +135
Showtime’s headliner sees two of Welterweight’s best clashing. Garcia is the favorite, but by a very slim margin. And that seems right. Porter is a tough out for anyone, and not the fighter you can ever expect to lose. But Garcia has the bigger wins, the more varied toolkit – I picked him to win as well. It’s tempting to put a but on Garcia at these odds, but beware: the chances of controversial scorecards feel very high in a close match-up like this.
Switching gears, here are the odds for HBO’s marquee fight, this time courtesy of 5 Dimes:
Juan Francisco Estrada -2225
Felipe Orucuta +1075
That’s quite the gap, but it is understandable. Estrada is one of the top two in the Super Flyweight division, while Orucuta is untested outside of Mexico, and there has put together a good but not killer 36-4 record. Probably best to avoid this one.
A few other fights taking place this weekend:
Adam Kownacki -175
Charles Martin +145
This is on the Porter vs. Garcia card. Martin sort of lucked into one of boxing’s major Heavyweight world titles after Klitschko vs. Fury. Kownacki is undefeated and on the rise. This is a good test for Kownacki, and these odds feel right.
Amir Khan -3500
Samuel Vargas +1200
It is what it is, as the odds indicate.
Finally, a look ahead to next week’s big fight:
Canelo Alvarez +125
Gennady Golovkin -155
