Saturday night’s main boxing attraction is a big one for purist fans of the Sweet Science. Live on ESPN, world champion, two time Olympic gold medalist, top 5 pound for pound fighter, and all around technical marvel Vasyl Lomachenko takes on world champion, two time Olympic gold medalist, top 5 pound for pound fighter, and all around technical marvel Guillermo Rigondeaux. The fight will exhibit the highest technical skills in the sport today, and has many die-hard fans salivating with anticipation.
As we head towards Saturday, here are the latest odds, courtesy of OddsShark:
Vasyl Lomachenko -450
Guillermo Rigondeaux +325
Lomachenko is the larger fighter, with the more potent offense, and has more paths to victory here. Add in the fact that Rigondeaux, while showing no signs of slipping, is at the relatively advanced boxing age of 37, and Lomachenko makes sense as the favorite. That said, Rigondeaux’s defense is incredible, and no fighter has yet been able to solve that puzzle. And THAT said, he’s also never faced an opponent of Lomachenko’s offensive capabilities, because frankly such an opponent doesn’t exist elsewhere.
Adding to the muddle of picking a winner here is trying to predict what will happen should this go to the judges. If neither man hits the canvas (a strong possibility), then this fight will be determined by individual rounds. And given these two styles, those individual rounds might be very, very hard to score. Look for contention over the final score cards if we find ourselves there.
All of that adds up to make this a tough fight to bet on. I’m picking Lomachenko to win, but at these odds, I don’t feel confident.
