Brazilian featherweight Rony Jason was caught on video attacking a woman during a party in Brazil.
UFC veteran and The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 1 featherweight champion, Rony Mariano Bezerra, better known as Rony Jason, will be investigated by Brazilian police for allegedly assaulting his own sister during a party in his native country.
According to Globo Esporte, Janaina Siebra, Bezerra’s sister, will not press charges against her brother, but the police will look into it anyway, since it’s a major infraction of the Maria da Penha law, a Brazilian law that was created to protect women from domestic violence.
“We analysed the footage. It was assault. Rony assaulted her with punches and kicks, that was caught on video. The Quixada police will take the necessary actions to proceed,” said one of the police officers.
The case only came to the police’s knowledge after the video went viral on Twitter.
“We saw it on social media,” the officer said. “Since it’s a public action, we can proceed whether or not the victim wants to give permission. She hasn’t looked for us, we were the ones who came to her.”
Although Rony Jason hasn’t spoken about the incident yet, the police say an announcement from the fighter is expected to be made. According to the Quixada police, Janaina’s health status is currently unknown.
On Tuesday, the UFC confirmed in a statement to Bloody Elbow that Jason is no longer on the promotion’s roster.
“UFC featherweight Rony Jason was released from the organization after suffering three losses in his last four bouts. Jason’s last UFC fight was in Fortaleza in March 2017.”
