UFC featherweight top contender Brian Ortega is itching to get back in the Octagon. He wants his shot at Max Holloway, but with all the talk that Holloway might be out for a while with whatever ails him, Ortega is willing to fight as early as UFC 227 in LA – as long as it’s for a title.
He explained what he wants on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show:
“From what I’m getting now, they said that Max might not fight for a long time, and he might not even fight 145. So I told them then, make the belt vacant and then I’ll fight whoever you guys want me to fight ASAP. I’ll fight them at UFC 227 here in Staples, but let’s get that situated.”
Notice how he said “vacant” and not “interim.” That means he wants Holloway to drop the title. That seems highly unlikely, especially considering how much the UFC has used interims lately. But either way, then you need to figure out an opponent.
The UFC really wanted to do Ortega vs. Jeremy Stephens for an interim title on short notice at UFC 226 once the Holloway fight fell apart, but Ortega wouldn’t go for it (which made Dana White mad). They could go in that direction again at UFC 227, but it seems like Frankie Edgar should be a viable option as well – even if Ortega beat him recently.
UFC 227 goes down on August 3rd, and is headlined by a bantamweight title fight between T.J. Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt. The co-main will see Demetrious Johnson taking on Henry Cejudo in a flyweight title defense.
