The Cain Velasquez era hasn’t lasted quite as long as many fans expected.
After claiming the title for the first time back in 2010, the wrestling powerhouse coughed up the strap in his first championship defense against Junior dos Santos. After reclaiming it once more in 2012, Velasquez defended the belt twice before running into a streaking Fabricio Werdum at UFC 188 this past June (watch it).
A loss many have attributed to Cain’s lack of preparation for the high altitude Mexico City has to offer. Excuses you won’t hear Cain offering up, as he says that’s all in the past.
“I should have prepared better, but I didn’t, so as far as that, it is what it is,” Cain said during a recent Q&A (via UFC.com). “It was my first time fighting in that kind of altitude, so you learn from it and you move on. That’s pretty much it. For next time, if that ever happens again, I know what I have to do.”
Being riddled by injuries throughout his career has prevented Velasquez from participating inside the Octagon as much as he’d like. But, injuries are part of the game and there isn’t really much one can do about it.
