Caio Magalhaes given six-month suspension, community service for spitting incident

UFC middleweight Caio Magalhaes was given a six-month suspension and 40 hours of community service for unsportsmanlike conduct at a Thursday meeting of the Nevada Athletic Commission in Las Vegas, NV. The commission unanimously approved the sentence.

Magalhaes, 27, spit blood on opponent Josh Samman and referee John McCarthy following a first-round submission loss on July 12 at The Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale.

Magalhaes repeatedly apologized to McCarthy and the commission for his “absurd” actions, adding that he and Samman had dinner after the fight and the two buried had “buried the hatchet.” Samman subsequently refuted that claim on Twitter.

Magalhaes asked for leniency from commission, stating that of his documented $20,000 purse, he actually “took a loss” for the fight after spending $17,000 on his training camp and additional income on post-fight expenses.
