It’s not often the sequel is better than the original, but that’s what happened for Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Last year, the fight was a controversial split draw, this year was a closer, more action-packed war, and in the end Canelo (50-1-2, 34 KOs) handed Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) his first ever defeat. The judges scored it 115-113, 115-113, and 114-114. Golovkin, devastated and face puffed up, left the ring without a post-fight interview.
Here are highlights from this unforgettable bout, which gave Alvarez the WBA and WBC middleweight titles.
