Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin official for September 16th

The mega-fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez is a done deal for September 16th.

Canelo Alvarez easily dispatched Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a fight that didn’t live up to its promise of an all-out war between two of Mexico’s biggest boxing stars. Chavez Jr. turned in a diabolical performance, while Canelo barely broke a sweat on his way to a 120-108 unanimous decision win.

While the fight fizzled, much bigger news was confirmed in the aftermath. The much-discussed superfight between Canelo (49-1-1, 34 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) is now OFFICIAL for September 16th. Golovkin was ringside at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and then entered the ring once the fight was announced.

Get excited, fight fans. You only have to wait a few more months for the big drama show. Golovkin’s Middleweight titles will be at stake, although if Canelo is true to his word, then GGG’s WBC belt won’t be on the line due to Alvarez’s displeasure with that sanctioning body. GGG is coming off a unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs, which snapped his long streak of KO/TKO victories, although he did drop Jacobs in their March bout. It was by far the toughest and closest fight of the Kazakh’s career.

This is a breaking news story so we will have updates as more details become available, including the venue for this massive HBO PPV matchup between two of the best boxers in the world.

As they wrapped up the proceedings, the two men offered up some last words for each other, and it was quite amusing:

Golovkin: “Good luck in September.”

Canelo: “Luck is for the mediocre people!”
