This is a can’t miss weigh-in – see if Chavez makes weight for his big PPV showdown with Canelo Alvarez right here.
This Saturday night, HBO Boxing celebrates Cinco de Mayo weekend with their annual big PPV event. This year, they are fully embracing the weekend with Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. In the lead up to the fight, tune in here to Bloody Elbow for live coverage of the pre-fight weigh-ins.
The Canelo vs. Chavez weigh-in will air in a live stream right here at Bloody Elbow starting at 5:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 p.m. PT today, Friday, May 5. You can also watch on YouTube.
Sometimes weigh-ins are just a perfunctory piece of business that can be overlooked – not this one. Canelo and Chavez have agreed on a catchweight of 164.5 pounds. That’s up from where Canelo has been fighting (and, it must be said past the 160 pound Middleweight mark he said he was not ready to fight at yet where GGG is concerned). Chavez has historically struggled with weight, missing weight spectacularly against Bryan Vera once, and fighting as high as 175 pounds.
The question of Chavez making weight is a big one for this fight, and has been given some extra importance by an interesting contract clause. Should Chavez miss the 164.5 pound limit, he will be fined $1,000,000 for every pound over the limit. The word coming out of Chavez’s camp is that between the fine and some personal animosity against Canelo, Chavez is coming in motivated and in shape. Friday’s weigh-in will be a key moment in letting us know just where things stand for him.
Join Bloody Elbow this Friday for the Canelo vs. Chavez weigh-in, and then again Saturday night for live fight night coverage.
