Jaime Munguia (31-0, 26 KOs) defended his WBO junior middleweight title with a quick TKO of the tough Canadian Brandon Cook (20-2, 13 KOs) in the Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 2 co-main event. This was meant to be a showcase fight for the 21-year-old Mexican, and he sure impressed, firing off lethal head-body combinations and using his size and strength effectively, bullying Cook around the ring.
Watch the ending in the clip below:
Here’s our play-by-play of the third round, which proved to be Cook’s undoing:
Round 3: Cook again coming out aggressively and digging the body. Munguia tagged with a right but then Cook is dropped with a shot to the forehead. He doesn’t look badly hurt and he beats the count. What a body shot! Cook doubled over in pain. He’s getting ragdolled and tattooed and that’s it. Great stoppage by Tony Weeks.
Official result: Jaime Munguia def. Brandon Cook by TKO at 1:03 in round 3, remains the WBO junior middleweight champion
This was Munguia’s fifth bout of 2018, and his third title fight. Munguia has now defended his belt successfully twice, and is one of the most intriguing 154 lbs talents in all of boxing right now.
The main event for Canelo vs. GGG 2 is no earlier than 11 PM PT.
