Canelo vs. GGG draws $27 million live gate, third-highest in Nevada boxing history

Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin was a huge success in terms of gate revenue.

Unsurprisingly, the highly-anticipated middleweight championship bout between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez was a major box office hit.

Boxing reporter Jake Donovan confirmed with the Nevada Athletic Commission that the September 16th pay-per-view main event pulled in a live gate of just over $27 million, a number only bettered by Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao (approx. $72.2 million) and last month’s Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor (approx. $55.5 million).

In a sizzling encounter, Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) and Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) fought to a controversial draw, with judge Adalaide Byrd turning in a puzzling 118-110 scorecard in Canelo’s favor. Pay-per-view buys are unknown at this point, but expectations are that it comfortably exceeded one million, which would be twice for Alvarez this year and the third time in his career as a PPV headliner. Canelo vs. GGG’s live gate is actually $7 million more than Mayweather vs. Canelo, which topped two million domestic PPV buys.

Rematch talks are currently ongoing, and if it does happen, the target date is May 5th, 2018.
