Carla Esparza selling TUF motorcycle to help ‘make ends meet’

Times have been tough for Carla Esparza.

The first-ever UFC women’s strawweight champion had shoulder surgery in 2015, missing a full year of action. Since fighting in April, Esparza has been absence from the Octagon, not by her own choosing.

Because money has been an issue, Esparza wrote Friday on Instagram, she has to sell the Harley Davidson motorcycle she earned by winning The Ultimate Fighter 20 in 2014.

If anyone is interested, I am selling my 2015 Harley Breakout that I won on The Ultimate Fighter 20 “A Champion Will be Crowned”. Brand new (bc of my shoulder surgery), purchase price was $19,799. Going with highest bid OBO. It’s very unfortunate that I am selling this bike not because I want to, but because I HAVE to in order to make ends meet. After having a year off from shoulder surgery (injury obtained at UFC 185), taking a short notice fight, and then 8 months since that fight, I literally have enough in my bank account to pay for 2 more months of bills. I need to fight and have been asking for a fight for so long, multiple times a week. I know I can make my run again but I also know that after being off for so long that I’m not ready to fight a title contention fight right away and all I’m being offered is the #1 contender (whom I’ve accepted and been scheduled to fight 2x in the past). I’m 100% down for that fight. I just asked for just one non-title contention fight with an actual camp after having so much time off from injury and the result is being benched for 8 months and still no word of a fight, not even a whisper. I’m at a loss of what to do. When I make my run, my intention is to WIN not because I’m being forced to when I’m not ready. Just frustrated and sad 🙁 if anyone is interested in buying my Harley or knows someone that might please contact me at [email protected]

Esparza said she has asked the UFC for a fight multiple times per week recently, but nothing is on the horizon. She said she has been offered to fight the No. 1 contender, but is not yet ready for a fight of that caliber after being out so long, saying she’d prefer a “non-title contention fight” first.

A request for comment from the UFC was not answered Friday afternoon.

Presumably, that top contender is Claudia Gadelha, who is coming off a win over Cortney Casey last month. Esparza and Gadelha were supposed to fight for the Invicta title in 2013, but Gadelha was hospitalized after a bad weight cut and the bout was canceled.

Esparza wrote that the motorcycle’s purchase price was $19,799.

Esparza (11-3) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Juliana Lima at UFC 197 back in April. The California native is the former Invicta strawweight champion and beat Rose Namajunas by third-round submission in December 2014 to become the first UFC 115-pound champ. Esparza, 29, beat Angela Hill, Tecia Torres and Jessica Penne on TUF 20 en route to the title fight against Namajunas.
