Charles Oliveira reacts to UFC 210 suspension ‘I think there was no need for that’

Former UFC featherweight contender Charles Oliveira made quick work of Will Brooks in his return to lightweight at UFC 210 in Buffalo, New York, submitting the former Bellator MMA champion in just under three minutes. Unfortunately, after Oliveira celebrated the victory by scaling the Octagon and embracing his coaches, he was suspended 60 days by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) for jumping outside of the cage. As you could imagine, the Brazilian does not agree with the decision.

“I was super sad, actually,” said Oliveira in a recent interview with MMA Junkie. “After a fight like that, of how it unfolded and how I won – and, man, I jumped there. It was a matter of fraction of seconds. I jumped and got right back in, practically.

“I jumped right next to the cage door, just to hug my cornerpeople and got back in, and the guys issued a punishment. I think there was no need for that. But what are you going to do? It happens.”

Oliveira, 27, captured his first victory at UFC 210 since 2015 and became only the fourth fighter in UFC history to record nine submission wins. Remember, the Brazilian was booted from the 145-pound division after missing weight four times in 12 fights.

“It’s something new to learn: not to jump out of the cage, regardless of it being quick, or just a little bit,” added Oliveira. “It’s not going to interfere in anything, hopefully.

“God knows all things, as it’s always been in my life. But I’m ready. When the UFC wants me to fight, I’ll be ready.”

Despite the suspension, “Do Bronx” should be back in action very shortly. While Oliveira wishes to rejoin the featherweight roster, UFC may have plans for the grappling wizard to stay put at 155 pounds.

What say you, Maniacs? Is a 60-day suspension for climbing the cage legit?
