Coach: Conor McGregor already training for Floyd Mayweather fight, but may have to compete at 147 pounds

In case you forgot why Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight kingpin Conor McGregor abandoned his post at 145 pounds, I’ve included a recent photo of “Notorious” (above) cutting down to hit the featherweight mark.

It wasn’t pretty.

But the power-punching Irishman may be forced to come within a few pounds of that limit if he hopes to lock horns with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their much-ballyhooed crossover super fight.

“In my mind, it’s on. That’s the mentality we’re in,” Coach John Kavanagh told FOX Sports News 500’s Bill and Boz show. “I really believe it’s going to happen this year, and that’s the mindset I have. So, let the people in the suits worry about the paperwork. We’re training for it.”

Both parties are negotiating a fighting weight of 147 pounds (subject to change).

Whether or not the “spectacle” ever comes to fruition remains to be seen. There is still the matter of agreeing on fight purses, as well as pay-per-view (PPV) distribution between both sides.

Stay tuned.
