After serving a mandated suspension courtesy of Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for a failed drug test, Jon Jones will return to action at UFC 214 on July 29 in Anaheim, California, to face current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier, in the headlining bout.
Full details here.
And if you’re wondering why “Bones” and his coaching staff down at Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA didn’t ask for a “tune-up” fight prior to facing off against “DC,” it’s simply because Jones didn’t need one.
Based on evidence from their first encounter at UFC 182.
“I love him fighting for the belt, I don’t think he had any need for a tune-up fight to go fight Daniel Cormier,” striking coach Mike Winkeljohn told The MMA Hour.
“As much as I respect Daniel, I think this is a very good fight for Jon because we beat him the first time, Daniel couldn’t take him down, Jon was able to take him down. Jon was able to beat him everywhere and that plays into our favor in this fight,” he added.
“We can expand on that and change some things so that [Cormier] fails once again. Jon studies so much and the fact that he had a lot of things figured out in the first fight, that he’s got most things figured out already, it should play out the same way.”
Winkeljohn has worked with Jones for the majority of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career and has seen him evolve over the years. Still, he says “Bones” is constantly improving and revealed that his student has some “meaner” things in store for “DC.”
“He’s coming in with a smile on his face and finding new ways to hit people with elbows,” he said. “So, he’s got some things that are even meaner for Daniel in this fight.”
As for Jones’ life outside the cage, one that has gotten into numerous jams that have held up his combat sports career, Winkeljohn says Jones is on the straight and narrow and will absolutely make the July 29th date for their much-anticipated rematch.
And as “Wink” predicts, the result will be the same, as “no one beats Jon Jones but himself.”
