Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor has four slots available to corner his upcoming Floyd Mayweather fight, taking place on Sat., Aug. 26, 2017 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
If you were expecting “Notorious” to stack the deck with as many big-name coaches as possible — especially those with expertise in the “sweet science” — think again, as McGregor is remaining loyal to his current crew.
That includes head coach John Kavanagh, boxing trainer Owen Roddy, and UFC featherweight slugger Artem “The Russian Hammer” Lobov, who will undoubtedly prove useful against “Money” and his team of pugilists on fight night.
“Obviously he’ll have to get his own cut man and stuff like that,” Roddy told The MMA Hour. “He hasn’t sorted that just yet. But it’ll definitely be myself, John and Artem at the moment. We’re not bringing anybody in as of yet, but who knows down the line. We came up with a game plan that we think can shock the world and we’re gonna stick to that for the time being.”
Oddsmakers don’t give the trash-talking Irishman much of a chance on fight night (see the opening lines here), but he’s become something of a sentimental favorite among trainers and celebrities, as well as the bane of boxing to longtime detractors.
One thing is for certain, even the critics are likely to tune in on fight night, which is probably why this estimate may not be as crazy as it sounds.
Time will tell.
