For flyweight prospect Cody Gabelman, picking up a 72-second submission win over Zakk Smith at Absolute Action 46 in April was just about the best way he could have started off his year.

And while he’s happy with how he was able to perform, he does wish he could have done a little bit more for all the people who came to see him fight.

“It was quick and easy, kinda,” Gabelman told MMAWeekly.com. “It was a hometown fight and I sold a lot of tickets for that show, and when it comes down to it, we’re entertainers, so I wish I could have put on a little bit longer of a performance, but when a submission is there, you can’t pass it up.”

Gabelman (5-2) will look to pick up his third win a row when he takes on C.J. Hamilton (8-4) for the Valor Fights 125-pound championship on August 13 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

“I really like putting on exciting fights, and I feel like he’s going to bring out probably the best in me,” said Gabelman of Hamilton. “He’s definitely the most exciting, fast, quick and intense fighter I’ve fought. I’m really excited for that. I’ve been looking for a fight like that.

“Maybe I’ll show off a little bit of what I’ve got standing. I feel like me and him can go back and forth pretty good. But after that, I think I’ll be able to get him on the ground, and that’s where I think the end will be, on the ground.”
