There’s a high stakes main event taking place on Saturday afternoon in Newark, New Jersey, as Colby Covington looks to (presumably) clinch a welterweight title shot by beating legendary former UFC champ Robbie Lawler.
While we could discuss what a compelling matchup this is and whether Covington’s pressure and wrestling will be negated by Lawler’s takedown defense and powerful striking, you’re REALLY here to know whether or not Colby will have in-arena support from the Trump family.
Well guess what? Covington has got the (supposed) answer to that question you didn’t even know you asked.
In an interview with TMZ, Covington indicated that we’ll see two of US president Donald Trump’s sons at the Prudential Center.
“It’s good to be here and have the Trump support,” Covington said. “They’re gonna be front row at my fight this weekend when I retire Robbie Lawler.”
“This is official – Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump, [Donald Jr’s girlfriend] Kimberly Guilfoyle, and a bunch of other people are going to be there with them,” he added.
“Yeah this will be the first time he’s out there supporting me.”
You may recall that last year, having beaten Rafael dos Anjos for the interim title, Covington had his wish granted to go meet President Trump at the Oval Office in Washington DC. Colby was then stripped of his title one month later, when Darren Till instead took on then-champion Tyron Woodley after Covington wasn’t ready to compete on that September date.
Covington also said in that interview that he might have to speak at next year’s Republican National Convention in support of President Trump, who’s up for re-election next November. Yeah, I honestly can’t believe I wrote that last sentence either.
UFC Newark: Covington vs. Lawler is live on ESPN with main card action kicking off at 3 PM ET/12 PM PT.
