Earlier this year, Portuguese welterweight prospect Joao Carvalho passed away following his technical knockout (TKO) loss to Ireland’s Charlie Ward at the Total Extreme Fighting (TEF) championship event inside National Boxing Stadium in Dublin.

More on that unfortunate tragedy here.

Ward trains under John Kavanagh inside Dublin’s Straight Blast Gym, alongside reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight champion Conor McGregor. The “Notorious” UFC 202 headliner now feels partly responsible for Carvalho’s fate, as he explained to Men’s Health (via Irish Mirror).

“It’s fucked up. I wasn’t just watching that fight. I helped train a guy to kill someone, and then someone wound up dying. This is a fucking dangerous game. People call it a sport, but it’s fighting. I’m just making sure it ain’t me. And that’s fucked up.”

The event referee came under fire following the fight (because of this), even prior to Carvalho’s death.

McGregor will move on to rematch Nate Diaz in the UFC 202 pay-per-view (PPV) main event which takes place Sat., Aug. 20, 2016 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ward, meanwhile, returned to action last June and won by majority decision.
