Daniel Cormier’s next challenger has been officially selected.
Daniel Cormier’s next trip to the Octagon is booked. As expected, Cormier will defend his UFC light heavyweight title against upstart contender Volkan Oezdemir. The fight will take place at UFC 220 on January 20th in Boston, MA. The UFC made it official with a tweet just a little while ago:
— UFC (@ufc) November 29, 2017
Cormier (19-1, 1 NC, 8-1 1 NC UFC) appeared to lose his title in his last bout, getting finished by Jon Jones in the third round of their UFC 214 matchup in July. However, Jones failed a USADA test after the weigh-ins so the result was flipped to a No Contest and Cormier was given his belt back.
Oezdemir (15-1, 3-0 UFC) is coming off two stunning first-minute finishes of Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa in May and July respectively. He was recently arrested for aggravated battery after a bar fight, but that does not appear to have had any effect on the fight booking.
While no other high-profile bouts have been signed for the event as of yet, the announcement didn’t say that the bout will headline the card. It certainly might, but they haven’t finalized that as of yet. UFC 220 takes place in the TD Garden in Boston on January 20th.
