community news, Cormier: Tony Ferguson hangs his chin up, would get ‘sniped’ against Conor McGregor

Daniel Cormier says Tony Ferguson’s glaring flaws would cost him in a future bout with Conor McGregor.

Tony Ferguson won the interim lightweight title at UFC 216 by beating Kevin Lee, which possibly lines him up for a title unification bout against Conor McGregor. According to current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier though, his glaring flaws would be his downfall in that potential match up.

“I think he’s really good. I think his cardio and pace are fantastic. I believe he makes some mistakes that would really cost him against Conor,” Cormier said on the Talk and Talker podcast. “Oh my goodness, do you see how high he’s holding his chin up when he’s throwing punches. You do that against McGregor, you’re getting sniped. You’re getting sniped!”

Lee also had some success with straight up boxing combinations against Ferguson, and as Cormier explains, it won’t end well if it was McGregor landing those.

“When Conor hits you with a clean shot, it doesn’t affect people like most people’s big shots affect people. It sends you f—ng skating on ice,” he said. “It turns you into a baby deer, when they can’t stand up and they’re f—ng shaking and shit.

“You just can’t let him hit you like that, but I think because of the way Tony fights, he kinda hangs his chin up there. That’ll make it so dangerous for him because McGregor is so accurate, so fast.”

Cormier was the third man on the commentary booth at UFC 216. Ferguson took offense to his analysis then, so it’s probably safe to assume he wouldn’t be happy hearing these new ones either.

Here’s the exchange they had on social media prior to these statements:
