community news, Could Conor McGregor show up at WWE’s WrestleMania next April?

Dubious sources are claiming that the WWE is “close” to a deal with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

Conor McGregor has built himself a worldwide following with his mouth and his fists. The bombastic Irishman has become one of the most colorful characters in sports, making the jump from the UFC to the mainstream with a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. that was one of the top-drawing PPV events of all time.

In effect though, McGregor’s persona reminds many of the stars in pro wrestling. So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the WWE is practically drooling over the idea of getting McGregor into one of their rings.

According to a source that should not be taken seriously at all, UK publication The Sun, Conor is again speaking to WWE and is “close” to a deal with them with them. But it wouldn’t take place anytime soon – it would be more fitting for him to make an appearance at WrestleMania 34, the promotion’s biggest show of the year.

Again, this is a long shot at best. McGregor has talked to WWE before and it went nowhere. He did manage to anger a bunch of pro wrestlers with his shtick (or they were merely working their own angles). They even weakly tried to get Floyd and Conor on their show to promote their fight.

There’s no guarantee his UFC contract would even allow him to participate in a WWE angle – though they obviously worked around that to make the Mayweather fight. At this point though, WWE almost seems like it should be an afterthought for someone with his current marketability, even if he is a fan of pro wrestling. Hopefully he’ll come back and defend his UFC lightweight title before anything else comes up.

I guess we’ll just leave the WWE crossover stuff to Ronda Rousey for now.
