Dana White: Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov Likely If Legal Issues Get Cleared Up
Conor McGregor may be inching closer to his return to action assuming he can get his legal issues cleared up soon.
McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC since 2016 when he turned his focus to a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather that dominated most of last year for the former two division champion.
Most recently McGregor’s name has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after he was arrested in New York in April and charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault and a felony charge for criminal mischief after assaulting a bus in Brooklyn ahead of UFC 223.
McGregor is scheduled to appear in court on June 14 in the first stage of dealing with those legal entanglements and UFC president Dana White says that has to be handled first before anything else can be scheduled.
“It depends on what goes on with him in New York in June. We can’t determine anything about what’s next for him until June is cleared up,” White said about McGregor’s return during the post fight press conference in Liverpool.
“Conor and I are going to meet in Vegas. He and I haven’t seen each other since New York so we haven’t seen each other, we haven’t talked. We need to get together soon.”
Because of McGregor’s legal issues still dangling overhead, White couldn’t commit to any fights much less a date for a return to action for the Irishman, but that doesn’t mean there’s not an opponent already in mind.
Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has always seemed like the most obvious choice for McGregor’s next opponent and White seems to agree.
“I’m pretty confident that is a fight Conor wants and I’m pretty confident that is the fight that Khabib wants so yeah I could see that happening,” White said with a smile.
Nurmagomedov has said that he doesn’t want to fight again until November, which would seemingly line up with a potential return for McGregor should he get cleared of any legal entanglements from his behavior in New York.
Right now White is just planning on meeting with McGregor in the near future to hash things out about what comes next for the former lightweight champion.
