Dana White: Conor McGregor will get chance to make history, but forfeit one belt if victorious at UFC 205

If Conor McGregor wants to become the first-ever Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter to simultaneously hold two world titles in two different weight classes, it’s going to be a very short run. That’s because company president Dana White appeared on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” this afternoon to explain how the UFC 205 main event between Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and 145-pound roost ruler, McGregor, came together late last night.

And he while not long on specifics, White essentially revealed that McGregor will be forced to forfeit either the Featherweight strap, which he has held hostage since Dec. 2015 by refusing to defend it, or the 155-pound crown if he can take it off Alvarez. In the history of UFC, no fighter has ever held two titles in two separate weight classes at the same time. However, Randy Couture and B.J. Penn each won championships in two separate divisions … albeit not at the same time. As to which title he would forfeit, White essentially intimated that it would be the Irishman’s decision to make.

In other words, White is giving his Golden Goose the opportunity to make history inside Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y., on Nov. 12, 2016, even though it has clearly upset at least one No. 1-ranked contender. To make things somewhat “right” with Khabib Nurmagomedov, White hinted that “The Eagle” could collide with No. 6-ranked Michael Johnson on the already-loaded pay-per-view (PPV) card. Meanwhile, former 145-pound champion, Jose Aldo — who seemed on track to finally get his rematch with “Notorious” after suffering a 13-second knockout — has maintained radio silence.

For now.
