UFC double champ Daniel Cormier appeared on Monday’s episode of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on ESPN, saying he feels that he will end up being stripped of the 205-pound title. Apparently, he may be right.
During a recent guesting on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, company president Dana White did echo Cormier’s previous statements.
“Cormier is hurt right now. He broke his hand in the Stipe [Miocic] fight,” White said (transcript via MMA Weekly). “So when they’re in these types of situations, much like the Conor [McGregor] situation and others that it’s happened to, Georges St-Pierre, whoever, Cormier by tying up two belts is going to have to give up one of the belts.”
White also previously stated his interest in seeing the third fight between Cormier and Jon Jones happen at heavyweight. But seeing the unlikelihood of Jones moving up, the UFC president is unsure if this fight would ever come to fruition.
“[Cormier] wants to fight Jon Jones and beat Jon Jones at 205. Not that that’s going to happen, but that’s what he wants in a perfect world. I would obviously rather see them fight at heavyweight, but I really don’t know if Jon Jones wants to move up to heavyweight. It really hasn’t played out yet.”
Last week, a report came out about a possible light heavyweight fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Yoel Romero at UFC 230. There is said to be title implications, either for the interim 205-pound title, or the official title, which Cormier still holds. Meanwhile, Jones has been tied to a Gustafsson bout as well, so who knows at this point.
