It seemed like such a fun idea at first — bottles and cans and just clap your hands! — but then the true professionals had to go and ruin it for Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. With a full day to let the UFC 202 press conference water bottle war sink in — more than enough time for those in attendance to consult legal counsel — it appears that the silly boys will have to pay for their brief moment of madness.

Literally.

“They’re both getting punished,” company President Dana White told TMZ.com. “What everybody has to understand is .. we’re overseen by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). I guarantee both of these guys will get massive fines. And there’s probably gonna be a hearing too after the fight.”

Indeed, NSAC Chairman Anthony Marnell affirmed his disappointment shortly after the dust settled, stating that the matter would be reviewed at an upcoming meeting. Remember, Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier were punished severely for their wild unsanctioned brawl, receiving significant fines and ordered to perform community service. However, according to White, it could get worse than that.

“It’s going to be ugly,” he said. “And the word is that in this thing, somebody was injured. [The wheels are in motion] for a lawsuit — who knows how it’s going to play out.”

That “somebody” is probably not the young girl who was interviewed by Nick Diaz after the incident — she was the daughter of someone in Diaz’s entourage. And he or she probably wasn’t dehydrated, which would go against one of McGregor’s numerous humorous excuses for returning fire like a madman.

Who’s laughing now?
