The UFC president didn’t hold back when asked about his current opinion of Jon Jones.
Jon Jones is currently sitting on the sidelines, suspended pending hearings with USADA and the California State Athletic Commission over a failed test for the steroid turinabol. It’s his second drug failure in two years, meaning he could be banned from the sport for a very long time.
UFC president Dana White was on the Dan Le Batard show recently and shared his thoughts on Jones.
“He’d also go down in history as probably the greatest ever and if nothing ever happened he’d probably be fighting at heavyweight right now and who knows what could have happened?” White said. “I’m in a business where when the fame happens and the money. You have to understand the crazy type of money that comes into the fight business instantly.”
“Jon Jones came in and just started making millions of dollars immediately and he was like 24 years old. And you can go back to interviews of me saying that’s great, he’s talented enough to win the belt. Can he handle the pressure and all the stuff that goes along with being a world champion? With being famous? With being rich? And that question got answered.”
If that sounds like a harsh thing for the president of the UFC to say about one of his greatest champs, it’s worth noting that Dana and Jon haven’t gotten along for a while now, with Jones refusing to even speak with White following the fallout from his first failed drug test.
But it doesn’t take personal animosity for White to say these kinds of things about his fighters, and his words are often hard to dispute. Just a little backwards as usual from a guy who’s supposed to be promoting his fighters, not burying them.
