The best way to get what you want is to ask for it. Glover Teixeira can attest to that.
With the top of UFC light heavyweight division log-jammed by interim titles and the rivalry between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, Teixeira did his own bit of fantasy matchmaking on Saturday night, calling out Anthony Johnson after putting the finishing touches on a thunderous victory over Rashad Evans at UFC on FOX 19.
Luckily enough for Teixeira, the match-up is one that instantly appealed to UFC president Dana White.
“It’s all about timing,” White said on FOX Sports 1. “It’s funny, when [Teixeira] called him out, I went, ‘oh, I like that fight.’ That’s a fun fight. Glover looked awesome tonight. Rashad Evans is always a dangerous guy. Rashad has speed in his hands, he has knockout power himself, and he got caught.
“You know I don’t make fights after fights, but I gotta be honest, when [Teixeira] called [Johnson] out, I like that fight.”
Considering Johnson’s status as one of the heaviest hitters in the entire sport, his name is not often thrown around by the opposition.
However Teixeira carries prodigious power of his own, and he proved that again at UFC on FOX 19, putting Evans to sleep in less than two minutes with a wicked right hand along the fence.
It was a vintage performance from the 36-year-old Teixeira, who has now finished three consecutive fights against the likes of Evans, Patrick Cummins, and Ovince Saint Preux. And it may have come at the perfect time, as the queue to challenge for the UFC light heavyweight title hit a standstill when Cormier withdrew from UFC 197 due to injury and the UFC opted to instead have Jones fight Saint Preux for an interim belt.
