Dana White says Conor McGregor has some physical advantages heading into the Floyd Mayweather fight.
Although nothing has been confirmed, a boxing megafight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not a matter of if, but when.
McGregor, the UFC’s biggest star and current lightweight champion, has never stepped foot in the boxing ring professionally but UFC president Dana White believes the Irishman has some physical attributes that could pose problems for Mayweather.
White still has ‘Money’ as the huge favorite but says McGregor has the age, size and power advantage.
“At the end of the day it’s a fight,” White said on Snoop Dogg’s ‘GGN News’ on Monday (h/t Simon Samano of MMA Junkie). “Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old; Conor McGregor is 27. Conor’s a big dude. Floyd has trouble with southpaws; Conor McGregor is a southpaw. And Conor McGregor hits like a truck. When he hits you, you know it.
“So, in no way, shape or form am I saying Conor McGregor wins this fight. I don’t know. But it’s more interesting than people think it is. … I promise you Conor McGregor will hit him. When they fight (Mayweather) will get hit, and it will be interesting to see what happens.”
While ‘The Notorious’ is the much bigger man, Mayweather is one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of all time and arguably the best defensive fighter ever. The five-division world champ has beaten greats such as Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, and Canelo Alvarez and is undefeated with an impressive 49-0 professional record.
McGregor, who is one of the best strikers in the UFC, has great hands and a devastating left hand but is lacking in pro boxing experience.
Sources indicate that the blockbuster fight is being targeted for September 14, but that date is subject to change.
