Whether Michael Bisping likes it or not, it seems that Yoel Romero will be getting the next shot at the UFC middleweight title.

At Saturday’s UFC 205 in New York City, Romero defeated former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman with a brutal flying knee at the beginning of round three. That victory marked Romero’s eight straight win in the UFC, and he remained the only fighter in the 185-pound rankings to be undefeated. Although Romero already had a solid resume to be worthy of a title shot against Bisping, it seems that a technical knockout over Weidman sealed the deal for the Cuban fighter.

“That’s the fight that makes sense,” UFC president Dana White said in the post-fight conference when asked if Romero was going to challenge for gold next. “I mean, he [Romero] beat Chris Weidman tonight. I don’t know when, but yeah, that’s the fight.”

Last week, Bisping said he was interest in fighting Weidman if victorious at UFC 205, but said that he wouldn’t fight Romero even if he defeated Weidman. In an interview with MMA Fighting leading up to the Saturday night, Romero responded to Bisping’s comments saying that if the were victorious against Weidman, and the UFC were to find him to be the No. 1 contender, Bisping wouln’t be able to fight against that decision.

As of this writing, Romero hasn’t been formally announced by the promotion to be the next in line for a shot at the middleweight belt.
