Here’s what Dana White had to say about putting together the Mayweather vs. McGregor deal and more.
It’s been a huge day for MMA and boxing news as the long rumored Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight has finally been made official, with the 12 round boxing match being held August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. UFC president Dana White made the fight official on Sportscenter earlier, and we’ve got all the details on the fight including weight and glove size he shared from that interview here.
Later on, he gave more information regarding some other aspects of the fight, including how tough negotiations were to put together.
“I can tell you from everyone’s perspective from every side, everyone is happy with this deal,” he said. “I don’t think anyone is bummed about this deal. First of all, the negotiations with Floyd were great, everything went smooth with Conor. It went a lot easier than I thought it would go and everyone is walking away from this thing happy.”
As for Conor McGregor and if he expected the Irish UFC champion to return to the Octagon, White seemed extremely confident.
“I think we will,” he said. “Obviously Conor and I have been talking a lot throughout this negotiation, and he wants to turn around and fight again this year. And that’s one of the million reasons people love Conor McGregor.”
Things got a little heated during the interview as ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith said the boxing community was ‘disgusted’ by the fight.
“I don’t know how many people feel that way,” White said. “Oscar [De La Hoya] feels that way because Oscar didn’t get the fight. If I was doing this deal with Oscar right now he’d be far from disgusted, I promise you that one. But at the end of the day, anybody that knows anything about fighting, when two men get in there and they square off and they start throwing punches, anything is possible. Anything is possible.”
“And this isn’t one of those things where we put together some type of crazy fight for no reason. This is a fight that the fans demanded. The fans wanted to see this fight, it’s the most talked about fight on the planet right now. And it will be the biggest fight ever in the history of two people punching each other. So they can be as disgusted as they want, it’s what everyone wants to see.”
“First of all, it’s about the fans,” White continued. “What do the fans want to see? And if you’re a fan of combat sports, this is the greatest end of the year ever. Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor are going to fight. GGG is going to fight Canelo. I’ve got a great rest of this year and so does boxing. It’s an incredible opportunity for fans of combat sports for the end of the year. There’s so many great fights. Sometimes there’s big runs and big gaps between big fights. We have nothing but a great lineup at the end of the year and everybody should be thrilled, including the boxing guys and Oscar de la Hoya.”
De La Hoya had previously talked trash about the fight, writing an open letter to fans telling them not to buy it and that it could possibly destroy the sport of boxing’s reputation. White wasn’t too happy about that earlier, and some are even wondering if the August date was meant to take the wind out of Oscar’s own massive boxing bout in September featuring Canelo vs. Golovkin.
But as we saw in this interview, White seemed more than willing to talk up that fight as part of a huge end of the year for combat sports. Why keep fighting each other in the media, he seemed to be saying? And hey, as history has shown, you don’t want Dana White as your enemy.
More on this huge fight as it develops.
