community news, Dana White wants Donald Cerrone to stay at welterweight

Donald Cerrone entered UFC 202 with his impending bout with Rick Story as the last fight on his contract, but based on statements he’s made, he has no intentions of fighting outside of the UFC.

The question remains, however, about where he’ll fight inside.

Cerrone made a career for himself as a lightweight before hitting a dead end when he was stopped by then-UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC on FOX 17 in December of 2015.

Since then, however, Cerrone’s been on a tear as he’s jumped up to welterweight. He submitted Alex Oliveira in February, TKO’d Patrick Cote in June and stopped Rick Story with strikes in the second round at UFC 202 on Saturday night.

‘Cowboy’, it seems, has his sights set on lightweight even though he’s a run at welterweight, telling UFC commentator Joe Rogan he wants a rematch with UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November. Cerrone holds a win over Alvarez that came in the champion’s UFC debut in September of 2014.

UFC President Dana White, however, has other plans for Cerrone.

“I don’t like the ’55. He looked amazing at 170,” White told FS1 after the event. “He’s on a roll. Nobody does that to Story, what he did to him tonight. Cowboy looks good at 170 and I’d like to see him stay there.”

When asked if White could possibly consider Cerrone on a title path in his new weight class, White seemed, at least, optimistic.

“Yeah, of course,” he responded. “I could.”
