Daniel Cormier issues apology for UFC 241 loss to Stipe Miocic: ‘I can’t stress the disappointment’

Two days after losing the heavyweight title to Stipe Miocic at UFC 241, Daniel Cormier has released a statement on the recent setback.

Cormier posted a lengthy message on his Instagram account Monday afternoon expressing his disappointment and apologizing to his fans, family and coaches for the loss.

“It’s been a couple of days and I can’t stress the disappointment,” Cormier, who fell to Miocic by fourth-round TKO in the UFC 241 main event in Anaheim, wrote. “I am so sorry to all I have let down. To my wife and kids I am so sorry you guys had to experience that, I never wanted y’all to see that and the hurt you guys showed breaks my heart every time I think about it. My coaches I am sorry, I appreciate the work and time you’ve spent with me. My fans, thank you guys for all the love and support you have guided me to all these amazing accomplishments.”

Cormier congratulated Miocic, whom ‘DC’ defeated in their first fight last summer, on a “tremendous victory.” Miocic, who became a two-time heavyweight champ Saturday night, was down on all three judges’ scorecards heading into the fourth round.

“You showed so much heart and grit, you are the definition of Cleveland tough,” Cormier wrote to Miocic.

Cormier, 40, is nearing retirement, but has yet to confirm whether or not the Miocic rematch was his last fight. Before the loss, “DC” said he would either retire after the Miocic rematch or fight Jon Jones a third time. Now, it seems as if a trilogy bout with Miocic is the most likely option for Cormier if he does decide to continue fighting.

“Dana White and all at the UFC thank you all for everything you have done for me and my family,” Cormier wrote. “This has been the most amazing journey, I will decide what I am gonna do now, and as soon as I decide you will all know right away.”
