Till: “I’ve had about a thousand messages from Brazilians, angry as well, saying they want me to kill Colby”.
Darren Till might have been born in the United Kingdom, but his MMA was forged in Brazil.
Till, 24, honed his mixed martial arts craft in Brazil for four years before moving back to his hometown of Liverpool earlier this year.
During his time in Santa Catarina, Till picked up the native tongue and has often been cornered in Portuguese. The Team Kaobon fighter says that, since Colby Covington’s tirade against the Brazilian crowd at UFC Sao Paulo, he has been bombarded with text messages from angry Brazilians calling for him to ‘kill’ the American.
“I’ve had about a thousand messages from Brazilians, angry as well, saying they want me to kill Colby,” Till told Ariel Helwani on a recent edition of The MMA Hour, per MMA Fighting’s Peter Carroll.
“(They say), ‘He’s disrespected our country and he’s disrespecting you’. You know, he really did. Why did he do that? That was ridiculous.”
Till, though, isn’t too upset by Covington’s comments and believes the NCAA Division I wrestler is trying too hard with the trash talk.
“I’m not offended, I just think it’s stupid. I think Colby is trying to be this bad guy trash talker, but it’s coming off a bit (disingenuous). It’s like he’s forcing it. It’s fake,” Till said.
“He’s trying too hard. Just be genuine and people will like you. Not a lot of people are liking him because he’s coming off as fake. Just be real and everyone will like you. Be a genuine person, you know?”
Till, who competes in the same division as Covington, stormed into the top 10 welterweight rankings with his first-round knockout of MMA veteran Donald Cerrone at UFC Fight Night 118 in Gdansk, Poland. Covington, 29, broke into the top 5 with his decision win over Deman Maia last week.
Undefeated at 16-0, Till is open to fights with Covington, Mike Perry, Kamaru Usman and just about any other fighter in the welterweight division.
“People want me to kill Colby for disrespecting Brazil. Then there’s me and Perry and there are a load of other guys as well. (Kamaru Usman) is on Instagram saying that he wants to fight me. It’s amazing.”
Till made his professional debut in 2013 and has won most of his fights via stoppage. The Liverpudlian is also interested in facing the winner of Stephen Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal.
